history
prehistory
In 1912, Captain Reinhard Wessels had the Pünte "Haren 35" built, which was entered in the shipping register of the Meppen District Court under number 141. The investment in further ships ("Lena Katharina", 1940; "Heinrich Wessels", 1951) and the entry of the two sons Gerhard and Adolf Wessels as captains allowed the family business to grow steadily over the years.
General
At the end of the 1960s, Captain Gerhard Wessels founded Wessels Befrachtungs- und Bereederungs GmbH in Haren (Ems). In the course of expansion, the Cargo Liner shipping company was founded in Berlin in 1972 , the early days of which were characterized by the redesign of special types of ships. Together with an engineering office, Gerhard Wessels developed a type of ship designed for inland and coastal shipping with a retractable forecastle and a movable wheelhouse - the " Cargo Liner ". At the Cramer & Booy shipyard in Kootstertille near Leeuwarden, Gerhard Wessels had the “Cargo-Liner I” built as the first of a total of six ships of this type. In 1976 Gerhard Wessels founded River Liner GmbH , which he also took over as head.
Expansion of international contacts
The expansion of business relationships with Eastern Europe resulted in numerous shipbuilding orders for the Harener shipping company over the years. New designs were also implemented. For his achievements in the field of shipbuilding in the Slovak Republic, Gerhard Wessels was awarded a diploma and honorary membership of the University of Bratislava in 1993 and an honorary doctorate in 1996. In addition to its cooperation with the Slovak Republic, the company can refer to numerous projects in the Czech Republic , Serbia , Bulgaria and Russia over the years . In 1997, Reinhard Wessels, the older brother of today's company director Gerd Wessels, founded Rederij Wessels BV , based in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ), another pillar of the Wessels Group.
Change of leadership
Gerd Wessels, who had been with the family business since 2002, took over the position of managing partner from his father Gerhard Wessels in 2004. The company also focuses on expanding international business relationships - especially in Asia.

Innovations
The shipping company has been a partner of SkySails since 2007 and supports the company with many years of maritime experience. With the help of a kite sail, the SkySails technology uses wind power as a drive to save fuel. This makes a significant contribution to environmental protection. In 2007, Wessels was the first shipping company in the world to retrofit its own cargo ship ( Michael A. ) with this innovative technology. Based on practical values, crucial data could be recorded, which resulted in an optimization of the technology. The potential of a cooperation was also used at the wind turbine manufacturer Enercon . In the initial phase of the deployment, Wessels took over the technical management of the E-Ship 1 .
