Ship types are divided into:
- Size : boats and ships
- Construction : full hull, planked frames , molded, laminated or large-panel construction
- Building material : wood , steel , concrete , plastic (mostly GRP , glass fiber reinforced plastic), composite material
- Type of drive : rudder , sails , steam engine , steam turbine , gas turbine , diesel engine , nuclear reactor , river flow - longitudinally and transversely (roller ferry), towing , stunt kite (additional drive), sea anchor
- Propulsion mechanics : paddle wheel , ship 's propeller also as a rotating nacelle, Voith-Schneider propeller , jet also as a bow thruster , fin , chain
- Purpose : cargo , passenger , war , work ships , sport and leisure boats
