Latin rigged kaik

Originally a narrow and manoeuvrable rowing boat in plank , keel and frame construction , known since the 16th century, was called Kaik , its rowers called Kajiktschi . Larger Kaiks were also equipped with triangular latin sails , or, like dhows , with trapezoidal set sails (see list of sail types ). As Turkish kajik , these ships used to serve as ferries between the two banks of the Bosporus .

In the period that followed, different regional ship types developed with the term Kaik as a generic term. What many of the ships used as cargo and fishing sailors have in common is almost only one hull with a raised bow and stern and a low freeboard in the middle of the ship. A bulwark made of canvas or wood is used to protect the cargo.

Latin rigged quay sails have square sails , stay jibs and jibs , which are driven on a vertical mast, and an additional Latin sail. Its yard is not raised, but set up with one end just in front of the mast so that the other end protrudes beyond the mast top. The sail is attached to a tree that extends beyond the stern of the quay.

In addition to this kind of rigging and caiques with a two-masted in the literature Bratsera - rig (with lug sails that are driven on a tree) described, and caiques with a one- or two-masted Sakoleva -Rigg.

Kaiks are also referred to as Trehandiri , Bratsera , Tserniki , Perama etc. in the Turkish, Greek, Bulgarian and Arabic-speaking areas of distribution , whereby the terms sometimes refer to differences in the shape of the hull and the type of rigging. Some of these types of ships are now equipped with at least an auxiliary engine, if not completely without sailing equipment.

In the Portuguese Caíque , distributed on the Algarve coast , and in the French Channel coast known Caïque is despite the similar names to entirely different types of sailing ships.
