Reg Smythe

Reginald "Reg" Smythe (born July 10, 1917 in Hartlepool , County Durham , England , † June 13, 1998 ibid) was a British cartoonist and comic artist . His main character was the comic strip series " Andy Capp " (in German translation "Willi Wacker", in Austria also "Charlie Kappl") , which has appeared in The Daily Mirror and The Sunday Mirror since 1957 .

Smythe's father was the shipyard worker Richard Oliver Smythe, his mother was Florence Smythe, nee. Pearce. Smythe created a memorial to his mother in the Andy-Capp-Strips by naming the wife of the eternal chauvinist Andy "Flo" (short for Florence) and endowing her with a never-ending patience.

Smythe began drawing cartoons during his military service - he joined the army in 1936 and served in Africa and the Middle East, among others , during World War II . His first drawings were published in Cairo newspapers.

After the war, Smythe settled in London and initially worked in the postal service. From 1954 he began to freelance cartoons for the Daily Mirror . His first series was titled 'Laughter at Work'. In 1957 Smythe began working on his hit series 'Andy Capp', which he continued until his death.
