Rainbow - For a New Left (short name: RAINBOW ) was an electoral association in Hamburg that existed from 1999 to 2007.

The voter community was originally a spin-off from the Green Alternative List (GAL), the Hamburg regional association of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen . In June 1999 five members of the GAL founded a parliamentary group due to the German participation in the war in the Balkans and were then members of the Hamburg citizenship for another two years . They were Heike Sudmann , Norbert Hackbusch , Susanne Uhl , Lutz Jobs and Julia Koppke .

The name rainbow was first used at the end of May 1999 in the Altona district assembly and shortly afterwards also in Hamburg-Nord , Bergedorf and Wandsbek . Among the most well-known figures in the public were the members of the parliament Heike Sudmann and Norbert Hackbusch as well as the former member of the parliament Andreas Bachmann and the Altona district member Olaf Wuttke. In the course of the liquidation of the Hamburg University of Economics and Politics (HWP), the rainbow founding member Bela Rogalla also appeared increasingly in public.

According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, various left-wing groups were organized in the rainbow, whereby the common appearance and political action was limited to the greater Hamburg area.

In the state election in Hamburg 2001, the rainbow received 1.7 percent (in the Altona district, however, 4.3 percent), in the 2004 state election (despite support from the PDS , SAV , DKP and other left-wing parties and groups) only 1.1 percent of votes.

The rainbow decided in April 2007 at a general meeting not to run for the Hamburg state elections in 2008 , and as a result declared on December 2, 2007 that it would dissolve itself. However, the organization has had a certain afterlife in the form of a still existing university group called Regenbogen / Alternative Linke at the University of Hamburg . In the 2008 state elections, the former rainbow member Norbert Hackbusch also succeeded in entering the Hamburg citizenry through the party Die Linke . Heike Sudmann also ran on the state list of the Left, but failed to enter the citizenry. In the citizenship elections in 2011 and 2015 , Hackbusch and Sudmann were elected to the citizenship for the Left, the former rainbow member Uwe Giffei has represented the SPD there since 2015 .
