Regine Witkowski

Regine Witkowski (born July 12, 1934 in Chemnitz ) is a German human geneticist .

Life

Witkowski graduated from high school in Limbach in 1953 and then studied biology from 1952 to 1958 with a major in botany at Greifswald University . After successfully completing her diploma with a thesis on in vitro culture, she was offered the management of a laboratory for cell cultivation at the dermatological clinic of the Berlin Charité . In 1961 the doctorate followed and in 1969 the habilitation on a cytogenetic topic. She was appointed associate professor in 1983. In 1988 Witkowski founded the Institute for Medical Genetics at the Charité, which she became director and was subsequently appointed full professor.

As a long-standing member of the board of the Society for Human Genetics of the GDR , she was instrumental in setting up organizational structures and in introducing further training to become a specialist in human genetics and a specialist in human genetics, but refused to join the SED . She has become a recognized human geneticist in Germany and beyond thanks to her significant contribution to specialist books such as “Textbook of Clinical Genetics”, “Lexicon of Syndromes and Malformations” as well as other works and the more than 175 international specialist colloquia in human genetics initiated. She also succeeded in building not only professional, but also personal relationships between East and West through the possibility of academic exchange. In 1999 she received the Federal Cross of Merit and in 2008 the Medal of Honor from the German Society for Human Genetics .

Witkowski was active for a long time as a church elder in the Protestant parish of Berlin-Heinersdorf .
