The 2015 Madeira regional elections were the eleventh Madeira regional elections since the re-establishment of democracy in Portugal in 1974 and took place on March 29th. There were 47 seats for the regional parliament of the Autonomous Region of Madeira . President Alberto João Jardim did not stand for election after 36 years in government. His successor as the top candidate of the Social Democratic Party was the former mayor of Funchal , Miguel Albuquerque . With around 45%, he achieved the worst election result of his party to date, but still holds just under the absolute majority with 24 seats. Regional elections take place every four years in Madeira, the last election took place on October 9, 2011. The voter turnout reached an all-time low of 49.72%.
