Map of potential regiopoles in Germany

In Germany and Austria, the term regiopole region is understood to mean the unity of the regiopole as the core city and its interdependent area. The interwoven area is not only based on administrative boundaries, but above all on the reality of its residents and thus on their regular commute. The term is not used in Switzerland, where a distinction is made between agglomerations and metropolitan areas , and there are also large regions according to the Federal Statistical Office .

The regiopolis fulfills a supply function for its surrounding area that goes beyond the daily needs, is its economic engine, its cultural and scientific center and its access to high-level transport infrastructure such as an ICE stop or airport - similar to the metropolises for their metropolitan regions . In contrast to these, the core cities of the regiopole regions with approx. 100,000 to 300,000 inhabitants are smaller cities than the metropolises, which are, however, of great importance for their surrounding areas.

actors

The concept of a regiopole region is primarily linked to close cooperation between regional actors across administrative borders. Actors here can include:

  • Cities
  • Counties
  • Communities
  • the ministries responsible for regional and / or state planning
  • Planning associations
  • Chambers of Commerce and Industry
  • Universities
  • Networks

In Germany

The concept was first developed for the Hanseatic city of Rostock and has been actively implemented since 2012. The cities of Bielefeld and Paderborn also decided to set up regiopole regions in 2015, and other cities have expressed interest in such initiatives. In the Harz Mountains, the five districts from three German countries belonging to the low mountain range have been cooperating under the leadership of the cities of Goslar , Nordhausen and Wernigerode to form a "Regiopole Region Harz" in which around 700,000 people live.

In March 2016, the "German Regiopole Network" was founded in Rostock, Bielefeld, Erfurt, Paderborn, Siegen and Trier. In April 2016, the first "Regiopole Region Economic Forum" followed by the partner cities and with representatives from Berlin and Hamburg in Rostock.

Rostock

Hanseatic city of Rostock and the surrounding district of Rostock , core of the regiopole region

The regiopole region of Rostock, here mainly consisting of the Hanseatic city of Rostock and the district of Rostock , was the first region in Germany to decide to work together under the umbrella of the regiopole region. To this end, a cooperation agreement was signed in June 2012, among others by these two partners from the Rostock regiopole region. An expansion of the cooperation to other municipalities in the interdependent area is planned and should be promoted through joint projects. The municipalities Ribnitz-Damgarten and Ahrenshoop in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen also joined the Regiopole network. In 2013 the art and culture festival "regio: polis" took place for the first time , also in places outside the cooperation area, e.g. B. in the south of Lolland in Denmark.
