The Reilsberg is 130.4 m above sea level. NHN high mountain peak in the northern urban area of Halle (Saale) and next to the 134.2 m above sea level. NHN high Große Galgenberg the second highest point of the city to the right of the Saale (the second highest point of the entire city area is in the Dölauer Heide , called Kolkturmberg or Bischofsberg, at 133 m above sea level).
history
The mountain was a gift from the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III to the physician Johann Christian Reil as thanks for his services. Before the donation in 1803, the Reilsberg was used as a vineyard and sheep pasture. Johann Christian Reil had a villa built on the mountain and the adjacent area converted into a park. The doctor's grave is located on the 130 meter high mountain and, since it was opened in 1901, the facilities of Halle's zoo . In 1901 the Reilsberg, previously known as "Schafsberg", got its name. In 1913, the stone Reilsturm was built on the highest point of the mountain , a 40 m high observation tower , which previously served mainly as a water reservoir for the zoo.
