Reinhard Gärtner (born February 8, 1944 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga . In the top division of the GDR Football Association , he played for 1. FC Union Berlin .

Athletic career

At the beginning of Gärtner's career as a football player were the BSG Lokomotive Frankfurt (Oder) and SC Frankfurt / O. Gärtner last played with SC Frankfurt in the second-rate GDR league before moving to league rivals Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt in early 1964 . With his 17 goals, which he scored for Frankfurt and Eisenhüttenstadt in 1963/64, he was one of the most accurate players in the Northern League season that season. In May 1965, Gärtner had to do an 18-month military service and during this time he also played football in the GDR league for the army sports association Vorwärts Cottbus .

After the end of his military service, Gärtner joined the league promoted 1. FC Union Berlin in January 1967. By the end of the season, however, he was only used twice as a striker for Hoge and Uentz, who could not be used. Even in the 1967/68 season Gärtner could not assert himself as a full-fledged regular player, in the duel with the newcomer Rainer Müller for the use in the Union storm, he only came to 13 games in the 26 games lasting season. In 1968/69 he played only eight times in the league team and was not called up in the 1968 cup final, which 1. FC Union had won 2-1 over FC Carl Zeiss Jena. However, with his three of six previous cup games he had a small share in the cup success. At the end of the season, the 1. FC Union had to relegate to the GDR league. In the GDR league season 1969/70 Gärtner finally succeeded in becoming a regular player, he played 21 of the 30 point games played and was the second best Union scorer behind Uentz with eleven goals. The new league season 1970/71 began Gärtner as a seeded center forward and played eleven of the thirteen first round matches. In the second half of the season he lost his regular place to the four years younger Bernd Vogel and was only used in four league games, only one of which lasted the full duration of 90 minutes. With his four league gates he was together with Felsch the top scorer of the Unioners, who surprised as a newcomer with fifth place, but had the weakest league attack with 27 goals scored. As a 28-year-old, Gärtner played his last league season for 1. FC Union Berlin in 1971/72. He was only used in three league games, twice as a left winger in the first half of the season and once as a substitute on March 11, 1972 in the 19th matchday 1. FC Union - FC Carl Zeiss Jena (1-1).

After five and a half seasons for 1. FC Union Berlin, Reinhard Gärtner has the following balance sheet: He played 41 league games with nine goals and 21 GDR league games with eleven goals. He was also used in nine GDR Cup games (2 goals) and in four Intercup games (1 goal). That's a total of 75 competitive games and 23 goals.

In the 1972/73 season Gärtner played for the GDR league club EAB Lichtenberg 47 and finally ended his career as a football player with the Berlin district league club SG Friedrichshagen.
