Reinhard Lipowsky (born November 11, 1953 in Heidelberg ) is a German physicist who deals with statistical physics and biophysics .

Life

After studying physics at the University of Heidelberg (1972–1978) , Lipowsky received his doctorate in 1982 at the University of Munich under Herbert Wagner with the dissertation The semi-infinite Potts model . He completed his habilitation in 1987 in Munich ( Critical behavior of interfaces: wetting, surface melting and related phenomena ) and held a professorship for theoretical physics there from 1989 to 1990 . From 1990 to 1993 he was director at Forschungszentrum Jülich (IFF), in connection with a professorship at the University of Cologne . Reinhard Lipowsky has been Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces since 1993 . He is also a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , honorary professor at the University of Potsdam and the Humboldt University in Berlin, and spokesman for the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on “Multiscale Bio-Systems”. Lipowsky was awarded the Wolfgang Ostwald Prize for 2017 .
