Reinhard Mannesmann (born May 13, 1856 in Remscheid ; † February 20, 1922 there ) was a German inventor and entrepreneur.

Life

Reinhard Mannesmann grew up with his brother Max (1857–1915) and four other brothers as the son of the tool manufacturer Reinhard Mannesmann (1814–1894) in Remscheid. The two joined their parents' company, which had existed since 1776 and was one of the most modern of its time producing iron files. In 1884 they invented the method of rolling a seamless steel tube from a drilled block , for which they received a patent in 1885 . At that time, modern steam engines generated high pressures that were transported in welded steel pipes. Numerous accidents were the result. In this respect, their invention was a major breakthrough, for which there was quickly a high demand. Reinhard and Max Mannesmann therefore participated in the founding of various pipe works in Bous on the Saar, in Komotau in Bohemia , which at that time belonged to Austria , in Remscheid and in 1899 in Landore in Wales .

But they were not yet satisfied with that: just five years later they succeeded in inventing the cross- rolling process , which, together with the pilgrim step process, allows endless production. In the first step, a steel block is perforated in the middle and thereby becomes a thick-walled hollow body, which is rolled into the finished tube in the second step using the cross-rolling process. The cross-rolling process of 1886 was initially hardly suitable for industrial production. The Mannesmann brothers did not succeed in producing a commercially available thin-walled tube in a single rolling pass. It took them four years until they finally combined skew rolling with the so-called pilgrim step process in 1890 . They received a patent for this groundbreaking invention on July 16, 1890. The concept of the Mannesmann process established itself for the combination of the two technologies. The material is released for a short time during rolling with an asymmetrical roller, rotated through a certain angle and pushed back for the next step. "This movement - back and forth - owes the process, based on the Echternach jumping procession, the name pilgrim rolling". Hitherto undreamt-of possibilities not only for the construction of pipeline networks , but also for mechanical engineering and for new uses in architecture were opened up by the new steel pipes, which were clearly superior in strength to the welded pipes used up to that point. In 1890, Reinhard and Max Mannesmann combined all three production sites in Germany and Austria in the German-Austrian Mannesmannröhren-Werke Aktiengesellschaft, whose headquarters were in Berlin . You took over the board of the stock corporation. The share capital of 35 million marks made the stock corporation one of the ten largest corporations in Germany right from the start. In 1893 Reinhard and Max Mannesmann left the board again. The company headquarters was relocated to Düsseldorf in the same year . A welding pipe plant was opened there.

All six Mannesmann brothers jointly developed the incandescent hanging light, which was patented in 1903 and which further spread the incandescent gas light . Together with his brothers Carl , the chemist, and Otto Felix (1874–1916), the physicist, Reinhard then founded the Mannesmann Lichtwerke AG , based in Remscheid, which produced gas and pendant lights with around 4,000 employees before the First World War and during the War under Carl Mannesmann as director with around 2000 employees acted as an arms and ammunition factory. After the war, the production of freezers and motorized plows began, but the company soon switched to repairing trucks damaged during the war and converting them for civilian use. Soon afterwards, the brothers also began developing automobiles and founded Mannesmann Motorenwerke GmbH in 1919 .

Reinhard Mannesmann married Marie Luise Eigen on January 6, 1906. They spent their honeymoon in Morocco . From 1907 to August 1, 1914, the couple engaged in trade, agriculture and mining in Morocco. Their property in Morocco was eventually valued at one eighth of the values ​​of the Sultanate of Morocco.
