Carl Mannesmann (born October 2, 1861 in Remscheid ; † March 28, 1950 there ) was a German inventor and industrialist .

Carl Mannesmann was born in Remscheid on October 2, 1861. His parents were the tool manufacturer Reinhard Mannesmann (1814–1894) and his wife Klara Rocholl (1834–1910). He had five brothers: Reinhard (1856–1922), Max (1857–1915), Alfred (1859–1944), Robert (1865–1913) and Otto-Felix (1874–1916) and five sisters. Carl Mannesmann was married to Emilie Rosalie Luckhaus (1881–1966) and had four children. His cousin was Fritz Koegel .

Live and act

Carl Mannesmann went to school in Lennep and then studied physics and chemistry at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg as well as metallurgy at the Bergakademie Berlin without formalizing these studies. Parallel to the studies, he supported his brothers Reinhard and Max in developing the production of seamless tubes (Mannesmann process).

Like his brothers, Carl Mannesmann has held many positions in the corporate network over the years. He was u. a.

  • Member of the supervisory board of the Mannesmannröhren companies in Bous ,
  • Member of the supervisory board of the German-Austrian Mannesmannröhren-Werke AG in Berlin ,
  • Managing Director of Mannesmann Tube Co. Ltd. for two years in Landore near Swansea in Wales ,
  • Since 1901, together with his brother Otto, head of the Mannesmann Sparlichtgesellschaft in Berlin and Remscheid ( renamed Mannesmann Waffen- und Munitions-Werke during the First World War ),
  • involved in ore mines on the Rhine and in Bohemia ,
  • Chief Executive Officer of Morocco-Mannesmann & Co. GmbH , Mannesmann-Handelscompagnie and the united Morocco-Mannesmann AG ,
  • Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Mannesmann-MULAG in Aachen ,
  • involved in Mannesmann Motoren-Werken & Co. in Remscheid,
  • involved in Mannesmann-Automobil-Gesellschaft mbH , Remscheid,
  • involved in the Brüder Mannesmann GmbH in Remscheid,
  • involved in Mannesmann-Handelsgesellschaft, Sofia. This received the salt monopoly in Bulgaria in 1922 .

From 1894 he built up a sales network on behalf of the company in the USA and was involved in the establishment of the Mannesmannröhren-Werke in Waterbury and Adams . However, the engagement in the USA was unsuccessful and was discontinued.

After his brothers Reinhard, Max, Robert and Otto died, Carl partly ran the company together with Alfred and Marie Luise Eigen, brother Reinhard's widow, and also founded new companies.

In 1924 the TH Aachen appointed him Dr.-Ing. honorary for his "services as a pioneer of German technology and German entrepreneurship abroad".
