Reinhard Menzel (born April 28, 1954 ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper who was active in GDR second division soccer in Leipzig in the 1970s .

Athletic career

In his second division career, Reinhard Menzel never got beyond the role of substitute goalkeeper. In the 1972/73 season he played for the first time at the age of 18 in the second-rate GDR league , in which he played eight of the 22 league games for the second team of the first division club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig as a substitute for goalkeeper Joachim Niklasch . After Menzel had guarded the gate of the locomotive reserve seven times in 1973/74, he moved to local rivals BSG Chemie Leipzig .

The chemists also played in the GDR league in 1974/75, with Hans Hofmann as No. 1 in goal. Menzel could not prevail against him either and was only used in seven league matches. The BSG ended the season as a climber in the GDR Oberliga, but let Wenzel play only with the 2nd team in the third-rate district league in 1975/76 . When Chemie Leipzig returned to the GDR league after being relegated in 1976/77, Wenzel initially passed Siegfried Stötzner and, after his move to 1. FC Lok, later passed Hubert Suchantke . It was not until the 1977/78 season that Menzel appeared again in the GDR league when he was allowed to represent Suchantke in three league games. Chemistry again reached the league promotion round, in which Menzel completed one of the eight promotion games. Since the promotion was missed, the team also played in the GDR league in 1978/79. This season, the 1.81 meter tall Menzel finally managed to outstrip Suchantke with twelve appearances. However, he was not used in the renewed promotion games, which this time were successfully completed. The BSG Chemie named the electrician for the first division season 1979/80 as one of the three goalkeepers in the squad, but he did not get to a league assignment.

For the 1980/81 season Menzel joined the district league eleven BSG Baukombinat Leipzig. There he played until the end of his soccer career in 1986. In the GDR league, Menzel was used in four seasons and came to 38 appearances.
