Reinhard Schlögl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reinhard W. Schlögl (born November 25, 1919 in Braunau in Northern Bohemia ; † September 21, 2007 ) was a German physicist , physical chemist and biophysicist .

career

Reinhard Schlögl attended the secondary school in Gablonz and later in Karlsbad . In Gablonz he worked as an intern in a ceramic factory, the owner of which advised him to study physics. After the annexation of the Sudetenland , he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1938 , and then in 1943 in North Africa in the USA - as a prisoner of war , from which he was released in 1946.

Schlögl studied physics at the University of Göttingen from 1947 to 1953 . In 1950 he received his diploma with a theoretical thesis on the specific heat of superconductors under Werner Heisenberg . He then completed his dissertation with Karl Friedrich Bonhoeffer at what was then the Max Planck Institute for Physical Chemistry on the subject of theoretical and experimental investigations on ion exchangers , with which he received his doctorate in 1953 . It was there that he came into close contact with Manfred Eigen . In 1957 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on material transport through pore membranes for physical chemistry at the University of Göttingen.

In 1963 he accepted a call to the full chair for electrochemistry at the TH Darmstadt . In 1965 he was appointed Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics , and at the same time he took over the full professorship for biophysics at the University of Frankfurt am Main . In 1967, when Karl Julius Ullrich was appointed to the institute's directorate, which has now been established, a team was established to research the transport of substances through membranes .
