In May 1961, Smolana founded his own bodybuilding studio in Munich, which he called the "mother of all fitness studios". Roy Black and Raimund Harmstorf were among his customers . When Smolana's competitor Rolf Putziger refused to finance his colleague Arnold Schwarzenegger 's trip to the Mr. Universe competition in Great Britain in 1967, the latter turned to Smolana. He paid Schwarzenegger the trip, who took second place. With an area of 220 m² and around 300 members, Smolana's studio was one of the largest in Germany in 1968, according to Smolana's own assessment. In 1972 Smolana opened a second studio in Munich, where she later established the first bodybuilding studio for women only. Smolana sold this second studio in 1988, the original studio at the beginning of the millennium. Smolana has lived in Munich and Florida since then .

The German Bodybuilding and Fitness Association inducted Smolana into its Hall of Fame in 2010.
