Baron Reinhard von Gemmingen zu Hornberg (born November 5, 1677 - January 11, 1750 ) was Hesse-Darmstadt privy councilor , captain of knights in the knightly canton of Odenwald and general director of the three knight circles .

Life

Reinhard von Gemmingen was born in 1677 as the son of the Baden court advisor and court marshal, Reinhard von Gemmingen zu Hornberg (1645–1707), and his wife Maria Elisabetha von Neipperg . After his training and several trips abroad, he gained his first professional experience at the Baden court. He was chamberlain and councilor to Margrave Friedrich VII Magnus , was introduced to the Baden college in 1705. In 1708 he entered Hessian services as a privy councilor .

In 1715 he was elected by the knight's convent to be the captain of knights in the knight canton of Odenwald . Since he had to reject the appointment as assessor for the two highest imperial dicasteries in order to take up the position , he demanded an increase in the salary of the captain from 600 to 2000 guilders. 1000 guilders were immediately granted to him, and the additional 1000 guilders were initially paid by individual members who hoped that he would soon convince the other members of the convention of his special qualities. In 1716 he sold his house in Wimpfen and had his aristocratic freedom transferred to the Merkelbach house. In 1717 he went to Vienna as an envoy . Around 1720, with the permission of the Heilbronn City Council, he moved the archives of the Odenwald knight's canton from Kochendorf to Heilbronn , where the administration of the Kraichgau knight's canton had been located for around 100 years . In 1736 he received from Emperor Karl VI. the entitlement to the castle loan in Kochendorf, with which he was enfeoffed by Emperor Franz I on December 9, 1749.

As general director of all three knight circles he died on January 11, 1750. His fiefdom successors were the sons Reinhard (1710–1775) and Eberhard August (1717–1758). His successor as director of the knight canton Odenwald was Meinhardt Friedrich Franz Rüdt von Collenberg (1720–1789).
