Reinhard von Werneck

Reinhard Freiherr von Werneck (born June 28, 1757 in Ludwigsburg , † July 27, 1842 in Munich ) was a Bavarian lieutenant general and director of the English Garden in Munich for six years .

Live and act

He was the son of Franz Friedrich Freiherr von Werneck and his wife Marianne Dorothea von Mentzingen . After working in agriculture and a short period of service in the Imperial Army , he joined the Bavarian Army . In 1797 he became a colonel and in 1798 he became director of the English Garden in Munich , at that time under military administration (Hofgartenintendanz), succeeding Benjamin Thompson (later Count of Rumford).

Under his aegis, new paths and plantings as well as buildings were created in the English Garden. In 1789 he had the Temple of Apollo built (not preserved, today on the site of the stone bench). In 1790 he had the Chinese tower and the economic building built , in 1791 the military hall (today Rumford hall), in 1793 the amphitheater (not preserved) and in 1796 the Rumford monument. In 1800 he laid out the Kleinhesseloher See and in 1803 he had the statue of Harmless erected at the southern entrance.

In 1803 von Werneck was released from his duties as director of the English Garden, his successor was Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell . Von Werneck was still active for a few years in military service as commander of the cadet corps , on March 9, 1804 he was promoted to major general à la suite. In 1837 he is listed as a retired lieutenant general.

On June 14, 1797 von Werneck had to take an oath that he was not a member of the Illuminati . Von Werneck lived at Prannerstraße 14 from at least 1842 until the end of his life.

Von Werneck had been an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1808 .

He is buried in Tegernsee .

Commemoration

Werneck monument on the Kleinhesseloher See

In 1838 the Werneck monument was unveiled in Munich. At the beginning of November 1890, the former Schloß-Strasse in Munich-Schwabing was renamed Werneckstrasse. The property at Werneckstrasse 1, Suresnes Castle was renamed after Werneck-Schlössl .
