Reinhold Bertlmann
Reinhold Anton Bertlmann (born March 7, 1945 in Reutte ) is an Austrian physicist and professor at the University of Vienna . His main areas are particle physics and quantum mechanics . He became known by comparing Bertlmann's socks .
Life
Bertlmann studied after high school Technical Physics at the Vienna University of Technology and Theoretical Physics and Mathematics at the University of Vienna , where he with the work also in 1974 on the influence of superconvergence relations on vector-dominated processes at Herbert Pietschmann doctorate. He worked as a research assistant in Vienna, at the JINR in Dubna and at CERN . After completing his habilitation in theoretical physics at the University of Vienna in 1981 with the thesis Duality between resonances and asymptotia , he held visiting professorships in Marseille , at the University of Paris-Süd and at the CNRS , Orsay. From 1987 until his retirement in 2010 he was associate professor at the University of Vienna. He continues to hold lectures and seminars there. Reinhold Bertlmann has been married to the artist Renate Bertlmann since 1969 .

In quantum physics , Bertlmann deals with generalized Bell inequalities , entanglement , decoherence and their geometric properties. He also deals with anomalies in quantum field theory .
He was a close friend and collaborator of John Stewart Bell and worked with Walter Thirring , among others . He is currently working with Anton Zeilinger , with whom he organized the famous quantum conferences Quantum [Un] Speakables I 2000 and Quantum [Un] Speakables II 2014. The collected contributions from 2000, published under the same title Quantum [Un] Speakables , were groundbreaking.
Bertlmann's socks
In 1978 Bertlmann came to CERN and worked there with JS Bell . Bertlmann always wore socks of different colors . In 1981 Bell wrote his article Bertlmann's socks and the nature of reality . In it he compared the EPR effect with Bertlmann's socks: When Bertlmann comes around a corner and you see that the color of one sock is pink, you can predict with certainty that the second sock is not pink too. The idea is therefore that it is the same with quantum entanglement. However, this is an inadmissible simplification. In the further course of the article, Bell explains the actual physical relationships.
Bell's text can also be found in his book Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics . In 2006 the German translation of a popular science book by the physicist Shimon Malin was published under the title Dr. Bertlmann's socks .
