Eurovision Song Contest

However, the song had to qualify for the Eurovision Song Contest via a back door , as the actual winner of the German preliminary decision , the song Hear 'den Kinder simply to the singer Corinna May , was already available in 1997 in an English version as a promo CD with the Edition number of 500 copies had been published. The title was disqualified by NDR and Sürpriz was nominated.

So the group Sürpriz entered Jerusalem , where the Eurovision Song Contest was held. The group, whose name is Turkish and means surprise , consisted exclusively of German-Turks and was founded especially for participation in the German preliminary round. So they sang Journey to Jerusalem - Kudüs'e seyahat in Turkish too. The rest of the text is in German and in English; the live version also includes a chorus in Hebrew .

With 140 points - including five maximum ratings (12 points) from Turkey , the Netherlands , from Poland , Portugal and Israel - it finished behind Take Me to Your Heaven the Swede Charlotte Nilsson and All Out of Luck of the Icelandic singer Selma third place among 23 songs.

The piece didn't make it into the charts.
