The Rectorate Church of St. Elisabeth is the former parish church of St. Lorenzen and is located on Völkermarkter Straße in Klagenfurt . The consecration title of the church is St. Lorenz , the patronage St. Elisabeth .

history

The church was built from 1720 to 1732 as a convent church of the Elisabethinenkloster and was sponsored by Archduchess Marianne , who lived in the current episcopal residence from 1768 until her death in 1789. In 1784 the sacred building became a suburban church and in 1853 an independent parish church. In 2010, Bishop Alois Schwarz abolished the parish and incorporated it into the cathedral parish .

Building description

The church is a north-facing , baroque, longitudinal central building with a cross-shaped floor plan. The sober exterior of the church is dominated by the tower with a curved pointed helmet on the southwest corner. A rocaille and the year 1730 can be seen in the gable above the former south-facing entrance portal .

The originally well-proportioned interior is impaired in its effect by the enlarged organ loft with arches below the barrel and the three-bay choir, which was lengthened by two bays in 1962. A barrel vault with stitch caps rises in the choir and in the area of the organ gallery . The domed Patzl vault in the central square was painted in 1890 by Josef Veiter with the Coronation of Mary and the four evangelists . Richly cranked cornice on pilasters , blind arcades and wall recesses divide the walls. The short cross arms of the nave are barrel vaulted. Three high, arched windows with lunette windows above them on the west wall of the choir and four arched or segmented windows on the south wall illuminate the interior of the church.
