Remigius Faesch (born May 26, 1595 in Basel , † February 27, 1667 ibid) was a Swiss lawyer , three times rector of the University of Basel and an important art collector .

Life

Remigius Faesch was the son of the Basel merchant and mayor Johann Rudolf Faesch (1572–1659). From 1614-16 he studied law in Geneva , Bourges , Paris and Marburg ; Hermann Vultejus and Regner Sixtinus were among his teachers . In 1620/21 Faesch went on a trip to Italy, which he used to study art history.

Faesch worked from 1628 until his death, almost forty years, as a professor of law in Basel. He was rector of the university in 1637, 1649 and 1660.

In addition to his teaching activities, Faesch founded the Faeschische Kabinett named after him through intensive collecting . This important collection of art and rarities remained in the possession of the Faesch family until 1823 as a family fideikommiss and was then handed over to the University of Basel. Together with the collection of Basilius Amerbach , the Faeschische Kabinett forms the basis of the art museum and the public library of the University of Basel .
