René Baumgartner

René Baumgartner (born February 12, 1930 in Grenchen ; † October 23, 2018 in Zumikon ) was a Swiss orthopedist and university professor . Like no other, he stood for the connection between clinical and technical orthopedics.

Life

Baumgartner attended the Solothurn Cantonal School , where he joined the Wengia Solodorensis student association . He studied medicine at the Universities of Lausanne , Bern , Vienna and Basel . He became a specialist in surgery and orthopedics at the university hospitals in Basel, Zurich and Geneva. In 1959 he was at the University of Zurich to Dr. med. PhD. In 1970 he came to the Balgrist University Hospital as a senior physician . There he completed his habilitation in 1973. The Westphalian Wilhelms University appointed him in 1985 as head of the clinic and polyclinic for technical orthopedics. In 1996 he was in Münster emeritus . His successor, Hans-Henning Wetz, was the last professor for technical orthopedics.

The collaboration between medicine and orthopedic technology became his life's theme. In 1970 he was one of the founders, from 1984 to 1989 on the board of directors of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO). For over 25 years he was involved in the advisory committee of the German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery for the interests of orthopedic shoemakers . In more than 360 publications and book chapters and countless lectures, he advocated that orthopedists and surgeons consider and use the requirements and supply options of technical orthopedics in their work.
