René Carpentier

René Lucien Carpentier (born August 2, 1928 in Sangatte , Pas-de-Calais department , † May 9, 1997 in Trith-Saint-Léger ) was a French politician ( FKP ). He was a member of the National Assembly and mayor of Trith-Saint-Léger.

Life

Carpentier, son of a working-class family, settled in Trith-Saint-Léger, in the Valenciennes area , after the war in 1945 . He started as a rolling mill worker at the Société metallurgique de l'Escaut . In 1953 a red-hot splash of steel hit him in the eye and injured him so badly that he was employed in the office from then on. As a member of the CGT trade union , he was elected to the Trith-Saint-Léger municipal council in 1959 . In 1961 he joined the French Communist Party (FKP). In 1966 he became a member of the Committee of the North Department Associationthe FKP. From 1965 he served as first deputy to the mayor of Trith-Saint-Léger. Carpentier was from August 1967 to 1988 a member of the General Council of the North Department for the Canton of Valenciennes-Sud . From 1971 to 1996 he held the office of mayor of Trith-Saint-Léger and was chairman of the inter-municipal association (SIVOM) of Trith and 15 neighboring municipalities .

From September 1990 until his death in May 1997, Carpentier was a member of the National Assembly for constituency 19 of the Nord department. Carpentier replaced the late Gustave Ansart in 1990 and was re-elected MP in 1993.

Carpentier died of cancer at the age of 69.

Honors

The Théâtre des Forges "René Carpentier" in Trith-Saint-Léger is named after him. In Rouvignies , the Salle René Carpentier , which is available to associations, and in Haveluy, the rue René Carpentier was named.
