René Clavel

Georges Joseph René Clavel (born August 21, 1886 in Kleinhüningen , † July 12, 1969 in Basel ) was a Swiss inventor .

Life

Clavel received his doctorate in chemistry in Lyon in 1910 . He continued his education at Bayer in Elberfeld and at the Technical University of Berlin . After traveling around the world , from 1912 he worked for his father's company, the silk dyer Alexander Clavel-Merian . Many " inventions and process patents that are established worldwide" originate from him .

In later years Clavel devoted himself to archeology . In 1955 he built the Roman house in Augst and donated it to the Pro Augusta Raurica Foundation . In 1956 he founded the Basel Association of Friends of Ancient Art (from which the Antikenmuseum Basel emerged ). “He bequeathed his country estate Castelen in Augst willingly to the canton of Basel-Landschaft as the Roman Foundation Dr. René Clavel . "

Clavel is an honorary citizen of Augst and the canton of Baselland . The University of Basel awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1956 .

As one of the first Basel sports pilots, Clavel was also a co-founder of the Swiss Aero Club and a member of the Pro Aero Foundation Board.
