René Floriot

René Edmond Floriot (born October 20, 1902 in Paris , † December 22, 1975 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French lawyer and at his time one of the leading Paris defense lawyers .

Life

Floriot was considered one of the best and most expensive lawyers in Paris. Among other things, he was the defender of the serial killer Marcel Petiot in 1946 and the Geneva lawyer Pierre Jaccoud in 1960. In 1949 he also successfully defended Otto Abetz , the former German ambassador to the Vichy government of occupied France (instead of the expected death penalty , he received only 20 years ) in a war crimes trial. He even portrayed Abetz as a kind of silent resistance hero who had prevented a “Polonization” of France.

Floriot knew his cases down to the last detail and meticulously prepared his cross-interrogations by rehearsing them beforehand and carefully considering the possible reactions of the witnesses to the questions with which he directed the interrogation. The following excerpt from the cross-examination of a psychiatric expert in the Petiot trial on March 18, 1946 is indicative:

Floriot: What, my client was admitted to a mental institution for stealing a book? Today he is charged with the murder of 27 people and is supposed to be normal and sane? Have you looked for insanity in his family? Didn't you notice any signs of deranged mind on his sister?
Expert: Petiot's relatives enjoy perfect mental equilibrium, his sister as well as the others.
Floriot: I'm sorry, but my client doesn't have a sister at all .

Later he took part as a screenwriter in some film productions. He wrote books about Marshal Ney and errors of justice. He also considered the Jaccoud murder trial in Geneva to be such , where he could not prevent a 7-year sentence (he commented on this by saying that if Jaccoud was guilty, the sentence would have been too low, and if he had not been acquitted). When French Marshal Alphonse Juin was dismissed for his sympathies with the OAS , Floriot sent him his book on Ney with the words to read it so that he could learn what could happen to a Marshal of France. Juin replied that this could not happen to him, as in this case he would have Floriot defend himself.
