René Gubelmann

René Gubelmann (born September 16, 1947 in Zurich ) is a Swiss drummer, vibraphonist and painter. Stylistically, he belongs to the specific genre, with representatives such as Max Bill , Richard P. Lohse , Hans Jörg Glattfelder and Fritz Glarner . René Gubelmann lives in Dietikon , Canton Zurich .

Life

Inspired by his father, who played the drum in his free time and ran a painting business in Dietikon, René Gubelmann attended the painting class at the Zurich School of Applied Arts from 1963 to 1967 and at the same time learned classical drums and vibraphone at the Zurich Conservatory . The parallelism of both trainings as a painter and musician laid the foundation for his later work, the interlocking of color design and music.

Create

From 1968 to 1970 René Gubelmann was a drummer in the orchestra of Radio Budapest and a member of the Hungarian rock and pop band Bergendy Együttes, where he played on the recordings of the hit single Te vagy a lexebb . After his return, his experience of live and studio work enabled him to work as a percussionist and drummer in the “Swiss Radio Entertainment Orchestra”, later the “DRS Big Band”. At the same time he was also active with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the Zurich Opera House and worked on numerous musical productions (" My Fair Lady ", with Helmut Lohner , "Cabaret" with Angelika Milster and others). After studying at the Institute for Color Psychology in Salzburg from 1974 to 1978, René Gubelmann began to graphically implement musical units of a harmonic and rhythmic nature.

Works

In 1974 René Gubelmann presented relief pictures on the occasion of an exhibition in Dietikon, in 1984 he exhibited the series "Music Pictures" in Spreitenbach. On the occasion of the performance "work in progress" in 1991, in collaboration with the big cat trainer Jerry Wegmann, the "track images" were created. The first rhythm pictures were created in 1995. A joint exhibition called "Quartet", together with the artists Joseph Staub, Paul Racle and Peter Wirth, took place in Dietikon in 1999. In addition to the regular exhibitions in galleries and art halls, René Gubelmann continuously played drums and vibraphone in various jazz formations (including Hazy Osterwald , Pepe Lienhard , Willy Bischof , Bert Grellmann, etc.), and now performs with the formations "Jazzquadrat" and "Renés Trio" on. From January 2019 René Gubelmann worked on his series "Color Anatomy of Church Music ", which was exhibited in mid-May 2019 on the occasion of the Zurich Symposium in the Zurich Predigerkirche .

Cultural engagement

From 2008 to 2012 René Gubelmann was artistic director of the Big Band Festival Dietikon. In 2007 he was elected Limmattaler of the year and in the same year received the culture award of the city of Dietikon .
