Willy Bischof (born January 28, 1945 in St. Gallen ; † December 23, 2019 in Zurich ) was a Swiss radio journalist and jazz pianist .

Life

After the Matura type A and the primary school teacher certificate , Bischof studied at the Zurich Music Academy from 1965 to 1967. From 1970 to 1973 he studied musicology , sociology and journalism at the University of Bern . Since 1969 he was with the Swiss Radio DRS , initially as editor, then as Head of Music ( DRS 1 1978-1983, DRS 3 1983 to 1988), it is responsible for all types of popular music . From 1988 to 1992 he headed the jazz editorial department and then worked as the responsible editor and presenter of the programs Apéro ( DRS 2 ) and Jazztime / Jazz Classics (DRS 1).

Bischof also played as a musician in the group S & L Ltd. , from which the Willy Bischof Quartet emerged . Then he founded the jazz rock group "Tetragon" with Peter Candiotto, Christian Geiser and Marc Hellman , which was one of the most successful Swiss formations in the second half of the 1970s. From 1978 he worked with musicians such as Pierre Cavalli , Kurt Weil , John Ward , Raymond Droz and Thomas Moeckel and was also active in popular music. After a career-related break from 1985 onwards, he did not give concerts again until 1991. Between 1994 and 2001, the focus was on Willy Bischof Jazztet feat. Hazy Osterwald and Willy Schmid . In 2005 he took early retirement to concentrate on making music. He has concentrated on playing solo and working in a drum-less trio (with guitarist Bill von Arx and bassist Beat Ramseier and Roman Dyląg ); In addition, Triple Sax has recently performed with the saxophonists Bruno Spoerri , Ernst Gerber and Mario Schneeberger .

Awards
