René David

René David (born January 12, 1906 in the Jura department ; † May 26, 1990 in Le Tholonet ) was a French legal scholar . He was considered an outstanding figure in comparative law in the second half of the 20th century. More than the standardization of the law, he felt obliged to the mutual understanding of persons acting in different legal systems.

David obtained his doctorate in 1928 with the thesis La protection des minorités dans les sociétés par actions . From 1930 he worked for UNIDROIT in Rome and in 1929 at the age of 23 he received a professorship at the University of Grenoble , which he held until 1939. During World War II he served in the French army and was badly wounded. From 1945 to 1968 he held the chair of comparative law at the Sorbonne, then at the University of Aix-en-Provence until his retirement in 1976 . From 1960 to 1970 he headed the French delegation to UNCITRAL .

David was Deputy Secretary General of UNIDROIT from 1962 to 1978. He was instrumental in the development of independent legal systems in Ethiopia and Rwanda . René David was one of the founders of the International Faculty of Comparative Law in Strasbourg and one of the editors of the International Encyclopedia of Comparative Law . One of his achievements was the establishment of the International Association of Legal Sciences of UNESCO .

In 1976 David received the Erasmus Prize . In 1973 he was elected to the British Academy and in 1988 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He has held honorary doctorates from universities in Edinburgh, Brussels, Ottawa, Leicester and Helsinki.
