The Reservoir Park is a park in Brookline in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The park surrounds the eponymous Brookline Reservoir and was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. In February 2015, it was classified as a National Historic Landmark .
description
The lake has a circumference of around 1.5 km and was completed in 1848 as the main end point of the Cochituate Aqueduct and thus as a drinking water reservoir for the nearby city of Boston . A circular path leads along the bank through the 13 hectare park, which is mostly below street level. The gatehouse , which was also built in 1848 and is located on the northeast bank, is to be mentioned as a special architectural feature . It was constructed of granite and limestone and has the oldest surviving iron roof structure in the entire United States. The wrought iron roof supports and the cast iron steps designed for public use are also the oldest of their kind in the USA. In 1902, the city of Boston sold the lake and the surrounding him land at a price of 150,000 US dollars (now about 4.59 million US dollars) to the town of Brookline, at which a number of wealthy residents - including Amy Lowell and John Charles Olmsted - a Third contributed.
With the transfer of ownership, the design of the new park to be created was carried out by Alexis French, who was employed by the city as an engineer. For the design he used willows and Japanese flowering cherries in particular , but also maples and various evergreen plants .
