Camil Ressu
Camil Ressu (born January 28, 1880 in Galați , † April 1, 1962 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian painter.
Ressu studied from 1897 to 1899 at the Școala Națională de Arte Frumoase with George Demetrescu Mirea , then in Iași with Gheorghe Popovici . After a stay in Munich he studied from 1902 at the Académie Julian with Jean Paul Laurens .
In 1908 he returned to Romania. Here he first published satirical drawings in magazines such as Adevărul , Cronica and Facla . After various group exhibitions, he had his first solo exhibition in Bucharest in 1914. Together with artists such as Nicolae Dărăscu , Ștefan Dimitrescu , Iosif Iser , Marius Bunescu , Dimitrie Paciurea , Cornel Medrea , Ion Jalea and Oscar Han , he founded the artists' association Arta Română in 1917 .
In 1921 he was one of the founding members of the Sindicatul Artiștilor plastici din România , of which he was chairman until 1923. Until 1941 he was professor and rector of the National University of the Arts Bucharest . In 1950 he became honorary president of the Union of Plastic Artists, in 1955 he was awarded the title of People's Artist.
