Reto Weiler

Reto Weiler (born May 17, 1947 in Wädenswil ) is a Swiss neurobiologist. He teaches and researches at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg , the University of Queensland , Australia and was Rector of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg in Delmenhorst from September 1, 2008 to September 30, 2018 .

Life

Reto Weiler studied biology at the Philosophical Faculty II of the University of Zurich and obtained his doctorate in 1977 at the Faculty of Biology at the University of Munich (LMU). rer. nat. From 1979 to 1986 he was a research assistant , academic advisor and senior advisor at the Zoological Institute of the University of Munich. During this time he received scholarships and fellowships from the European Science Foundation , the Swiss Society for Medical-Biological Grants and the Alberta Heritage Foundation, combined with research stays at the CNR Neurofisiologia, in Pisa , at the University of California, Los Angeles , and at the University of Calgary , Canada . In 1982 he completed his habilitation in zoology at the Faculty of Biology at the University of Munich.

In 1986 he accepted a professorship for neurobiology at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg . He has headed the Neurosensory Research Center since 2004, and from 2004 to 2012 he was the spokesman for the research group "Dynamics and Stabilization of Retinal Processing". From 2005 to 2008 he was Vice President for Research and in 2008 he was appointed Rector of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg , Institute for Advanced Study , Delmenhorst .

He was co-initiator of the European Medical School , Oldenburg-Groningen, and since 2014 he has been chairman of the founding commission for a medical faculty at the Johannes Kepler University , Linz .

Research topics

The focus of his research lies in the elucidation of the neuronal processing in the retina . For this he uses a broad spectrum of molecular biological, anatomical and electrophysiological techniques. He has made important contributions to the role of electrical synapses and horizontal cells, for which he was honored in 2012 with the Boycott Award of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology . Since 2008 he has also been working on the archeology of rock art in the Kimberley region in northwest Australia .

Honors and memberships

Reto Weiler received the Swiss Medical Academy Award in 1981 and the Japanese Taniguchi Award in 1987. In 1990 the Max Planck Research Award and in 1997 the Australian International Research Award. The city of Oldenburg honored him in 2008 with the Oldenburg Bull . He is honorary professor at the University of Queensland , Australia , a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , Senate member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a member of the Austrian Science Council .
