Reuben Phillips

Reuben Phillips (* 1920 or 1921 in Providence , Kentucky ; † February 13, 1974 in San Juan , Puerto Rico ) was an American jazz musician ( alto and baritone saxophone , arrangement ).

Live and act

Phillips attended Alabama State Teacher's College and played with Andy Kirk from 1943 , with whom he stayed until late 1946. In the 1950s, he worked with jazz and R&B musicians like Willis Jackson , Big John Greer , Mabel Scott , Milt Buckner , Count Basie , Louis Jordan , Gene Redd , Annisteen Allen , Sammy Lowe , Little Willie John and George Rhodes , 1960 with Dud Bascomb .

Phillips directed the house band of the New York Apollo Theater for a total of 19 years ; In 1969 he recorded a first album under his own name ( Manhattan ... 3:00 AM ); in the big band played u. a. Harold "Money" Johnson , Ray Copeland , Buster Cooper , Eric Dixon , Seldon Powell , Haywood Henry , George Barrow , Skeeter Best, and Bill English . Another album was made in 1961 ( Big Bad Band at the Apollo ), u. a. with Jesse Drakes and Billy Butler . In the field of jazz he was involved in 39 recording sessions between 1943 and 1971, most recently with Erskine Hawkins ( Live at Club Soul Sound ).

Phillips, who had also worked with artists such as Nancy Wilson , The Supremes and Isaac Hayes , died of a heart attack in 1974 at the age of 53 while in Puerto Rico for a concert on the Sammy Davis Jr. show .
