María Reyes Maroto Illera (born December 19, 1973 in Medina del Campo ) is a Spanish economist and politician with the PSOE . Since June 2018 she has been minister responsible for industry, trade and tourism in the Sánchez cabinet .

Career

Maroto, who grew up near Valladolid , studied economics at the University of Valladolid , where she graduated in 1996 with a licentiate . She then continued her studies at the Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros , which she successfully completed in 1998 with a master's degree. While she worked for the research foundation FEDEA between 1998 and 2003 , she began teaching at the Carlos III University in Madrid in autumn 1999 . Her main focus was on fiscal and monetary policy with an emphasis on the European monetary system . In parallel to her university activities, she was a consultant for the consulting company AFI between 2005 and 2011 . The associate professor then worked for the IDEAS Foundation think tank of the PSOE until 2013 , before she supported the PSOE MEPs in the European Parliament as an advisor . Between 2014 and 2015 she completed postgraduate studies in health economics at the University of Carlos III.

In May 2015, Maroto was elected to the Asamblea de Madrid . From then on she sat on the budget, economy, finance and employment committees. After Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had been overthrown with a constructive vote of no confidence in the Congreso de los Diputados on June 1, 2018, King Felipe VI took the following day . to Pedro Sánchez order to form a new government. On June 7th, Maroto took over the ministerial office for industry, trade and tourism and resigned her previous offices in the Asamblea de Madrid. After the Spanish parliamentary elections at the end of April 2019 , she moved into the lower house as a member of parliament.
