LVR industrial museum
The LVR-Industriemuseum is a decentralized museum with locations in six municipalities of the Rhineland Regional Council (LVR). It is based at Hansastrasse 18 in Oberhausen . Until October 2008 it was called Rheinisches Industriemuseum, or RIM for short.
Despite the number of the name, the LVR-Industriemuseum consists of several institutions in different locations that are combined under one name as effective branch offices.
Storage of museum items
The "Peter-Behrens-Bau" (not to be confused with the Peter-Behrens-Bau in Berlin ), the former main warehouse of the Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen, is now the museum's central collection depot. This building was built between 1921 and 1925 based on a design by the architect Peter Behrens .
Story and concept
The museum was planned in the 1970s by the Rhenish Office for Monument Preservation and the Rhenish Museum Office. On May 10, 1984, the Rhineland Regional Council founded the museum. It bears the subtitle "Rheinisches Landesmuseum für Industrie- und Sozialgeschichte" ". The development was supported by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the preservation of monuments, the participating cities and sponsoring associations at the respective locations.
The museum's slogan is: “ Seven locations, one museum ”. In listed factories, some of which are still completely intact, not only are the technical aspects of the working world of the industrial age presented, but societal, social and other historical areas are also presented in museums. In this respect, the concept of the museum differs significantly from other technical or open-air museums . Textiles, metal, paper and electricity show the typical branches of industry of the Rhenish industrial landscape as focal points.
Together with the LWL-Industriemuseum of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL), the LVR-Industriemuseum shows the most important branches of industry and the extensive industrial history in North Rhine-Westphalia . The magazine Industriekultur is published jointly ( Klartext Verlag , appears four times a year), in which places, objects and landscapes from the industrial age from the two museums and from Germany and abroad are presented.
Further partnerships exist with the Museu de la Ciència i de la Tècnica de Catalunya in Spain and the Ecomusée Le Creusot Montceau Les Mines in France.
The museum is located in regional and larger networks on industrial culture, for example in the Netzwerk Industriekultur Bergisches Land e. V. , integrated into the Route of Industrial Culture in the Ruhr Area and the European Route of Industrial Culture (ERIH).
