history

Rhode Island State Route 138 used the Stone Bridge over the Sakonnet River until 1954.

Before the opening of a section at Jamestown in 1994 as an expressway, the State Route ran from the Jamestown Bridge over Eldred Street , which is now partially cut off from the Expressway, and East Shore Road to Newport Bridge . In 2005 there was a sign pointing to RI 138 north of East Shore Road and north of Newport Bridge.

Before the new expressway was built in North Kingstown, it ran along Bridgetown Road east of US Highway 1 in South Kingstown, then north on State Route 1A to North Kingstown and finally along the feeder road to the Jamestown-Verrazano Bridge , which was being expanded for the expressway has been.

There are two abandoned former access ramps at the west end of Jamestown Bridge that were only used by traffic in the early 1990s. These ramps connected the street with the old bridge, as the new bridge was still under construction at the time. The new Jamestown Bridge opened in 1992.

It was planned to extend the expressway west to Interstate 95 .

Rhode Island State Route 138 officially runs in an east-west direction to the junction of Admiral Kalbfus Road with West Main Road Route 138 on the Middletown-Newport border, then in a north-south direction.
