Identifying features

Individual plants of Rhodobryum roseum grow to around 5 to 6 cm. They grow in flocks between other mosses or form dark green lawns. The moss is characterized by the large, rosette-shaped crested leaves at the tip of the stem, while underneath the stem only a few flaky, distant leaves are formed. The leaf rosettes consist of 15 to 23 leaves that are dryly corrugated and twisted. The leaf margins are bent back and serrated in the upper part of the leaves and do not have a clear border. The midrib ends below the tip of the leaf. The lamina cells are elongated rhombic to hexagonal, about 100 to 170 µm long and 20 to 40 µm wide. The upright seta, which is up to 5 cm long, has a hanging to upright, cylindrical, brownish-colored spore capsule that forms spores 16 to 25 µm in size. However, the diocesan moss rarely develops sporophytes . A spore ripening takes place in the winter half year.

Occurrence

Rhodobryum roseum colonizes lime-poor to -rich, weakly basic to weakly acidic, humus-rich, loamy, sandy-loamy soil and is found in fresh to moist, partially shaded or shaded, humid locations in forests and bushes, on embankments, on damp roadsides, creeks and Riverside, in alluvial forests, in boggy-swampy places and more rarely in meadows and at the edges of forests. Typical accompanying mosses are Calliergonella cuspidata , Cirriphyllum piliferum , Climacium dendroides , Plagiochila asplenoides , Plagiomnium affine , Plagiomnium undulatum , Rhizomnium punctatum or Thuidium tamariscinum . The moss, which is widespread in Germany and Europe, penetrates to subalpine altitude levels (around 2000 m). It is also found in parts of Asia and North America. However, moss is a little less common in the lowlands.
