Rhodoferax saidenbachensis is a gram-negative , short rod-shaped bacterium from the genus Rhodoferax with a length of 1 to 1.8 micrometers and a width of 0.2 to 0.4 micrometers. The bacterium reacts positively to the oxidase test , it also has the enzyme phosphatase , but the catalase activity is negative.

The bacterium was isolated from the sediment of the Saidenbach drinking water reservoir . The species name saidenbachensis was therefore chosen for the bacterium described and researched by René Kaden . Due to the similar genetic characteristics, the related species Albidiferax ferrireducens was transferred back to the genus Rhodoferax .

Compared to the related species, the bacterium has a different fatty acid composition. In young cultures there is no pigment. It is noticeable that Rhodoferax saidenbachensis shows growth even at temperatures close to freezing point . However, the growth rate is relatively low even at higher temperatures. The bacterium uses glycerol and D - mannose .
