Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus is a common moss that can displace grasses in suitable locations and form species-specific moss lawns. One would translate the scientific name in German roughly with “Sparriger Wrzelbruder”. "Sparriges Kranzmoos" or "Sparriger Wrzelpeter" is also sometimes used.

features

It is a sturdy, more or less irregularly branched moss with upright or ascending stems. It reaches heights of up to 15 cm. As a rule, the plants are 5–10 cm high. The color varies between yellowish green, pale green and olive green.

The sparsely leafed stems are typical: the leaves , which suddenly have a long, pointed tip from a broad oval base, are clearly turned down in the middle. Only the leaves at the tips of the trunks protrude horizontally and thus form a star-shaped wreath, which explains the name "Kranzmoos". A vein is missing or short and double. The leaves have entire margins or only sawn at the tip.

The oval capsules stand horizontally on the Seta and are about 1 to 2.2 mm long.

distribution

Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus is common across the northern hemisphere and New Zealand .

It grows on earth in meadows, bushes or elsewhere between grass, both on poor and nutrient-rich soils. It can form extensive and dense lawns. In Central Europe it is common everywhere and can be found in the inner cities.

Others

The similar species Rhytidiadelphus subpinnatus is sometimes considered a subspecies of Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus . It has not yet been clarified whether these are distinct species.
