The Hylocomiaceae is a family of the moss order Hypnales . The family has its main distribution in the northern hemisphere.
Typical characteristics
They are mostly relatively strong mosses that are loosely branched and can often form large lawns. Some of the most common forest and meadow mosses are in this family.
The leaf cells of the mosses of this family are always very long and narrow. The leaves lack a central rib, but at the bottom there is a very short double or single rib. In contrast to the Hypnaceae , the cells of the leaf wing are never particularly differentiated.
