The eponymous genus Hylocomium of the moss family Hylocomiaceae consists of two species worldwide, according to the Stech & Frey system. In Germany all species of the genus Hylocomium are protected by the Federal Species Protection Ordinance (version February 16, 2005, list ).

A characteristic of these mosses is their tiered structure, which has also given them the German name “tiersmosses”. Every year a more or less regularly single to triple pinnate shoot grows on them. In the middle of the upper side of this shoot, the next year's shoot branches off, grows approx. 1 cm upwards, and then branches again horizontally, so that the next "floor" is created. Depending on the type, this tiered structure is more or less regular.
All species are quite strong mosses that reach lengths of 10 to 15 cm. The leaves are usually broadly lanceolate and more or less suddenly drawn out into a long tip.
Systematics and types
According to the Stech & Frey system, several species formerly belonging to the genus Hylocomium have been separated from it; of the species represented in Central Europe are:
- Hylocomium brevirostre to Loeskeobryum brevirostre
- Hylocomium pyrenaicum to Hylocomiastrum pyrenaicum
- Hylocomium umbratum to Hylocomiastrum umbratum
The only Central European representative of the genus now remains:
