Identifying features

The moss forms yellow to brownish green, shiny, often extensive lawns. Its reddish-brown colored stems are up to 5 cm long and have two to three pinnate layers. The so-called floors are an important determinant. These are annual shoots that are stacked like stories. The uppermost section, which is mostly fresh yellow-green in color and only simply branched, is also the youngest section. It rises in the middle of the top of the previous year's branch. The oval-shaped leaves lying against the stem are slightly longitudinally folded and no larger than 2 mm. The sheet suddenly turns into a point in the front part. The edge of the leaf appears finely serrated under the microscope. The short vein is doubled.
