The diocese floor moss or floor moss ( Hylocomium splendens ) is a common forest and meadow moss .
Occurrence and distribution
The moss can be found on fresh, often weakly acidic forest soil. But it also inhabits mountain meadows at high altitudes, forest edges, moors and heaths . It penetrates into the high regions of the Alps . It is only found relatively rarely in northern Germany. The moss occurs throughout the northern hemisphere, in Europe , large parts of Asia , Africa , North America and in some scattered populations even in New Zealand .
Identifying features
The moss forms yellow to brownish green, shiny, often extensive lawns. Its reddish-brown colored stems are up to 5 cm long and have two to three pinnate layers. The so-called floors are an important determinant. These are annual shoots that are stacked like stories. The uppermost section, which is mostly fresh yellow-green in color and only simply branched, is also the youngest section. It rises in the middle of the top of the previous year's branch. The oval-shaped leaves lying against the stem are slightly longitudinally folded and no larger than 2 mm. The sheet suddenly turns into a point in the front part. The edge of the leaf appears finely serrated under the microscope. The short vein is doubled.
