Ricardo Bressani

Ricardo Bressani Castignoli (born September 28, 1926 in Guatemala City , † January 30, 2015 ) was a Guatemalan nutritionist.

Bressani graduated from the University of Dayton with a bachelor's degree in 1949 and Iowa State University with a master's degree in 1951. In the same year he returned to Guatemala, where he worked at the Institute of Nutrition in Central America and Panama (INCAP, Instituto de Nutrición de Centro America y Panama) was. In 1956 he received his PhD in biochemistry from Purdue University . Until 1993 he headed the Department of Food and Agriculture at INCAP. He then worked at the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala as head of the Department of Food and Agriculture.

In 1967 he was visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1978), the Academy of Sciences of Guatemala and the Third World Academy of Sciences (1983).

He published over 500 scientific papers (2008) and was editor of the Archivos Latino Americanos de Nutricion.

In 1984 he received the first Albert Einstein World Award of Science . He received the McCollum Award from the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, the Grand Cross of the Order del Quetzal of Guatemala and the Premio Científico México. In 2001 he received the Ibero American Prize in Science and Food Technology from Mexico and in 2003 the International Prize of Nutrition from Danone .
