Richard Altmann

Richard Altmann (born March 12, 1852 in German Eylau ( Iława , Rosenberg district, today in Poland), † December 7, 1900 in Hubertusburg ) was a German pathologist and histologist .

Altmann studied medicine in Greifswald , Königsberg , Marburg and Gießen . He received his doctorate in 1877. Altmann became assistant and prosector at the University of Leipzig , where he completed his habilitation in 1882 and in 1887 became an associate professor of anatomy and histology . Since 1893 he was a full member of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences in Leipzig .

Richard Altmann discovered the mitochondria in 1886 and coined the term nucleic acid in 1889 .
