Sir Richard Croft of Croft Castle († July 29, 1509 ) was an English knight .

Life

He was a son of William Croft and Margaret Walweyn.

The Croft family were very close friends with the Mortimer of Wigmore family, and thus also associated with the York house. He began his career in 1454 as Governor of Ludlow Castle and tutor to Edward, Earl of March , later King Edward IV , and Edmund, Earl of Rutland , the two elder sons of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York . From this time there is also a letter from Eduard to his father in which he complains, among other things, about the severity of his tutor, which does not seem to have harmed their future relationship, as they are both referred to as friends.

Faithful to the House of York during the Wars of the Roses , he fought at the Battle of Mortimer's Cross in February 1461, which was fought on his own lands, at the Battle of Towton in March 1461, at Barnet in April 1471 and at Tewkesbury in May 1471, where it succeeded Edward of Westminster , the son of Henry VI. and Margaret of Anjou , the heir to the throne of the House of Lancaster , captured and handed over to Edward IV. For this he received the knighthood as a Knight Bachelor from the king on the battlefield .

Sir Richard was Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1470/71, 1476 and 1485 and was entrusted with a number of duties as Commissioner in Herefordshire.

Under King Richard III. he became Treasurer of the King's Household .

Sir Richard also held several offices during the reign of King Henry VII , for example Treasurer of the King's Household , Receiver General of the Earldom of March and Steward to Prince Arthur . Sir Richard was also heard as a testator at the hearing in January 1486 concerning the papal dispensation for the marriage of Henry VII to Elizabeth of York . On June 16, 1487, Sir Richard fought for Henry VII at the Battle of Stoke and was defeated by the King to the Knight Banneret before the battle .

Sir Richard died on July 29, 1509 and has his final resting place in St. Michael and All Angels' Church at Croft Castle.

Marriage and offspring

Sir Richard was married to Eleanor, daughter of Edmund Cornewall, Baron of Burford. His wife was the widow of Hugh Mortimer of Kyre.

They had the following children:

  • John
  • Anne ⚭ John Blount of Kingley
  • Elizabeth ⚭ Richard Fiennes, 4th Baron Saye and Sele
  • Edward (Sir)

The couple probably had other children, but since Sir Richard had a younger brother of the same name, this cannot be clearly seen in the sources.
