Richard Crandall
Richard Eugene Crandall (born December 29, 1947 - December 20, 2012 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American computer scientist and physicist .
Crandall became known for his contributions to algorithmic number theory , particularly for the development of the Irrational Base Discrete Weighted Transform (IBDWT), an important method for finding very large prime numbers . He was Associate Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Center for Advanced Computation at Reed College until his death .
With his colleague Joe Buhler , he is involved in the project for the numerical verification of the conjecture made by Harry Vandiver and Ernst Eduard Kummer about the number of classes in circles.
