Richard J. "Dick" Egan (born February 28, 1936 in Milton , Massachusetts , † August 28, 2009 in Boston , Massachusetts) was an American entrepreneur and diplomat . Egan was a co-founder of EMC Corporation and the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland . He was considered one of the most successful corporate leaders in the US in the 20th century.

In 1961 Egan graduated from the University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston . In 1963 he was with a team in the development of storage systems for the Apollo program of NASA involved.

In the Korean War he served in the US Marines .

With Roger Marino , he founded the EMC Corporation in 1979, which within a few years developed into the largest independent manufacturer of storage systems and one of the most economically successful companies in the USA. Until January 1992, Egan was chief executive officer of EMC Corporation.

On March 14, 2001, President George W. Bush named Richard Egan as US Ambassador to Ireland. He held this office until January 31, 2003.

At the age of 73, Egan, who suffered from end-stage diabetes and lung cancer, among other things, died by suicide in August 2009.
