Richard L. Heschl.

Richard Ladislaus Heschl (born July 5, 1824 in Welsdorf near Fürstenfeld ( Styria ), † May 26, 1881 in Vienna ) was an Austrian anatomist .

Heschl studied at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate there in 1849. In 1850 he became first assistant to Carl von Rokitansky , in 1854 professor of anatomy at the medical-surgical school in Olomouc and in 1855 professor of pathological anatomy at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow .

In 1861 he became a professor at the Graz Medical and Surgical College, where he was appointed full professor of anatomy in 1863 . From 1864 to 1865 he was rector of the University of Graz , where he founded a pathological-anatomical museum.

In 1875 he became a full professor of anatomy at the University of Vienna .

The "Heschl'sche (transverse) windings" ( lat. Gyri temporales transversi ; also: "Heschl'scher Gyrus") were named after him. The Heschl coils are located in the primary auditory cortex .
