Sir Richard John Dalton KCMG (born October 10, 1948 ) is a former British diplomat .

Life

Richard Dalton joined the foreign service in 1970. He studied Arabic at the Middle East Center for Arabic Studies in Lebanon . In 1973 he became the embassy secretary in Amman . From 1975 to 1979 he was employed at the UN headquarters. He intended to be run as a candidate for the Conservative Party in the 1983 general election in the constituency of Richmond (Yorks) .

Since his sister-in-law, Sara Keays, found no support from Cecil Parkinson for her candidacy for the House of Commons and was not married by the latter, Dalton did not pursue his candidacy and in 2003 became head of the consular department in Muscat . From November 1993 to 1997 Dalton was Consul General in Jerusalem . In 1998, Dalton headed the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's human resources department . From 1999 to 2003 he was the first ambassador to Tripoli in 17 years . From 2003 to 2006 he was ambassador to Tehran .

Dalton was inducted into the Order of St. Michael and St. George as Knight Commander on April 21, 2005 and retired in 2006. In his retirement he was employed by a consulting company and wrote for daily newspapers.

Richard John Dalton married Elizabeth Mary Keays on January 1, 1972. They have two daughters and two sons.
