Richard Kotuk

Richard William Kotuk (born November 23, 1942 in New York City , † February 10, 1998 ) was an American journalist , film director and film producer .

Live and act

Kotuk was born in New York in 1942 to John and Victoria Kotuk. He received his bachelor's degree from New York University in 1964 . The following year he completed a writing workshop at the University of Iowa . From 1976 to 1978 he attended the New School for Social Research in New York.

Kotuk worked as a journalist and filmmaker for WNET-13, a television broadcaster for the Educational Broadcasting Corporation. Among other things, he made several contributions for The 51st State , a TV documentary series about New York from 1971 to 1975 . He then spent eight years senior film producer of the PBS telecast Bill Moyers Journal . He then worked for the CBS broadcaster WCBS-TV.

In 1983, Kotuk and Ara Chekmayan produced the documentary Children of Darkness , which critically examines the treatment of mentally ill children in American clinics. They were honored with an Oscar nomination for the film . In the 1990s, Kotuk made the documentary Travis about the everyday life of a boy suffering from AIDS . Filming in the Bronx took three years. Shortly after the film was finished, Kotuk died of a heart attack at the age of 55.
